An East vs. West Grandfinal is ensured with DC vs. VP, Newbee vs. Wings in the semis.

After an action-packed day of elimination and decider matches, the playoffs of ESL One Genting is set to finally begin. Both NA team Digital Chaos and Chinese team Newbee had a free day, having already secured their spots for the semifinals by topping their respective groups, while unfortunately for the home crowd, both Malaysia-based teams Fnatic and Warriors Gaming Unity bowed out of the competition early after having lost to NP and Execration, respectively.

Coming into the semis from group A is CIS favorite Virtus.Pro, looking to have regained their pre-Boston Major form after a commanding 2:0 versus NP. Their first game was a more even match, lasting 55 minutes thanks to a valiant effort by Kurtis “Aui_2000” Ling on the Luna and Jacky “EternaLEnVy” Mao on Mirana, however a costly fight by the Roshan pit with great positioning from Vladimir “No[o]ne” Minenko on the Sniper gave VP the advantage to take the match. The second game was far more one-sided, with VP showing very clean executions of their multiple-disable combos through Pavel “9Pasha” Khvastunov on Nyx Assassin and Ilya “Lil” Ilyuk on Slardar allowing the set up for No[o]ne’s Invoker and Roman “Ramzes666” Kushnarev’s Juggernaut to shine.

Meanwhile, The International 6 champions Wings Gaming take their semifinal spot coming from group B, eliminating our Filipino team, Execration. Their first game started out with the laning stage going well for Execration, who secured 7 kills on the board by eight minutes. However a costly teamfight on the 15-minute mark gave the momentum, and eventually the game, to Wings, thanks in part to Zhang “Faith_bian” Rudia’s unconventional offlane Magnus scoring 8 kills for his team and setting up teamfights through RP’s. The second game, was more one-sided, with Wings able to secure an early lead and never letting it go. They opted for Lifestealer infest-combos with Centaur Warrunner, getting early pickoffs and eventually snowballing to take the match at 42 minutes, with a final kill score of 20:1.

With these results, the playoffs will be putting both western teams and both Chinese teams against each other. We’ll see VP face off against TI6 runner-up DC, where Roman “Resolut1on” Fominok will be facing off against his fellows from the CIS, and also Newbee versus Wings, a matchup that’ll be sure to excite as both teams have faced each other numerous times since TI6, with alternating results.
