Euneil “Staz†Javinas takes home the WESG Hearthstone Championship
The WESG was a tournament to remember for Philippine esports teams, as TNC Pro Team took the gold for Dota 2, and Euneil “Staz†Javinas also won the gold for Hearthstone.
Staz’s win at the tournament marks the first premier tournament win from a South East Asian representative for Hearthstone, signaling what could be the start of the surge in the esport for the region.
His long road to the grand finals started all the way back from the country-level qualifiers, to the Asia Pacific and China qualifiers last November.
Staz came into the quarterfinals off a strong performance from topping his group, securing the his top 8 finish and defeating the Swedish representative Elliot “Fluffy†Carlsson 4:1. In the semi-finals he faced off versus Raphael “BunnyHoppor†Pelter, who represented Germany and is signed with Virtus.Pro, and Staz took the series 4:2.
The grand finals match between Staz and Swedish representative Jon “Orange†Westberg, who is currently signed onto Alliance and is GosuGamer’s #4 in the world ranking, was certainly one to remember – it was a lengthy RenoMage mirror slog lasting seven matches and even going into fatigue before Orange finally conceded the match. Staz’s 4:3 win also marked the highest prize pool won by a South East Asian for Hearthstone.
