The international super-team bags $125,000 and another premier title under their belt.
The tournament began with eight of the CS:GO scene’s top teams vying for the $250,000 prize pool. They were grouped into two groups of four for the GSL-format group stage.
Group A was comprised of SK Gaming, Cloud9, Natus Vincere and Team EnVyUs, where the two teams from the Americas emerged victorious – SK Gaming garnered a 2-0 score with a +15 round difference, while Cloud9 clinched the second spot with a 2-1 and +3 round score difference. These two teams moved on into the playoffs.
Over in Group B, the North American teams of FaZe Clan and Team Liquid prevailed over their European rivals, Astralis and Virtus.Pro. FaZe clinched the top spot with a 2-0 score and an impressive +21 round difference, while Liquid claimed the second with a 2-1 and +8 round score difference.
The playoffs saw SK Gaming face-off versus Team Liquid, wherein Liquid was able to take the match in a nail-biting upset. The first map of Inferno went into double overtime, with Team Liquid taking it 22:18. SK Gaming came back with an impressive second map on Overpass, taking the map in a quick 16:5. The third map of Cobblestone ended in Liquid’s favor despite the very close rounds – with Liquid closing it out 16:14 and punching their tickets to the Grand Finals.
It’s another story on the other side of the bracket, with FaZe Clan steamrolling easily over Cloud9 – the first map of Mirage saw FaZe take an early lead and close it in a quick 16:4, and the second map of Overpass was an even more dominant 16:3.
It was somewhat a similar story in the Grand Finals, with FaZe getting an early dominant victory in the first map of Inferno, and while Team Liquid were much more competent in the second map of Overpass, they were still unable to close out with a win and FaZe took it 16:14. The third map of Mirage was another dominant victory for FaZe, this time taking the map – and the tournament – with a commanding 16:4.
FaZe’s star player, Nikola “NiKo†Kovacs posted top frags across the board, and his entire team performed admirably all tournament. With usual rival teams experiencing slumps in form FaZe Clan looks set to dominate what’s left of the 2017 season.
