Four out of the eight teams competing will be going in the StarLadder’s third and last Minor for the season scoreless, with an opportunity to finally taste their first ever Qualifying Points.
Nearly four months before The International 8, the road to the grandest Dota 2 tournament in the world becomes more and more challenging for everyone involved. StarLadder ImbaTV Invitational Season 5 will be the second to the last Minor in the season, making this opportunity for the participating teams to snag some much needed Qualifying Points.
Four out of the eight teams entering this tournament have yet to secure any Qualifying Points. With the top four teams earning QP in this tournament, there’s a high chance that one of these four teams will be awarded their first ever QP. These four teams, namely, Vega Squadron, OpTiC Gaming, FlyToMoon and SG e-sports will be facing against VGJ.Thunder, Fnatic, Natus Vincere and Team Kinguin.
With arguably a not-so-stacked lineup of teams competing in the tournament, this presents a big opportunity for these teams to win Qualifying Points without having to go against the likes of Team Liquid, Evil Geniuses, LGD Gaming or Newbee, just to name a few. For Fnatic and Na` Vi, they will be fighting for their place in the top eight. However, even if they do win the first place in this tournament, they still need to follow through with more victories beyond, to be able to qualify for a Direct Invite.
VGJ.Thunder sits precariously at the eighth place of the leaderboards, with 1665 Qualifying Points. Winning in this tournament would help them secure a higher place in the leaderboards, and probably earn a Direct Invite through this and another event down the road.
Lagging behind all of them is Team Kinguin, with currently 90 Qualifying Points, thanks to their third/fourth place at Dota Summit late last year. They will have to win first here to even have a small chance of getting invited, on top of winning a podium finish for each of every one of the succeeding events.
The same could be said about the other four teams, who are just a little bit behind Team Kinguin in terms of points.
Thanks to these desperate conditions, we expect intense battles out of these competitors. The do-or-die nature of their situation during this whole tournament could bring the best out of these teams, given that they keep their cool and play their game without fear of losing.
A total of $300,000 (~Php16,000,000) will be at stake in the tournament, including a total of 300 Qualifying Points.
