In just one round of the China Supermajor playoffs, seven teams secures their tickets to The International 8. The top seven teams of the world, namely, Virtus.pro, PSG.LGD, Team Liquid, Team Secret, Mineski, Vici Gaming and Newbee have secured their slots in the grandest stage of them all. Only one more team will gather enough points to merit themselves a direct invite, and it all rests to however the Supermajor will pan out here on.
VGJ.Thunder is clinging on thin thread, being the eighth team in the rankings as of now. Unlike all of the other teams above, VGJ.Thunder can still be overtaken by the other teams in the tournament. TNC Pro Team can still qualify in the International directly if they place second or above. Similarly, OpTic Gaming can still qualify if they score a fourth place victory. Both cases assumes that VGJ.Thunder doesn’t place any higher. VGJ.Thunder so far manages to survive, scoring a 2-0 sweep against The Final Tribe, eliminating them in the tournament, and sending them to the Open Qualifiers.
On the upper bracket runs, Team Liquid beat all-Filipino TNC Pro Team in a clean sweep, sending them to the lower bracket. Liquid made quick work of TNC, a testament to the team’s strong chemistry, being one of the only two teams to not have changed rosters at any time this whole season. Team Liquid secures top 6, along with Team Secret, after the latter beat OpTic Gaming 2-1. VP would also beat Newbee in a show of technical skill from both sides, winning in a very contested 2-1. Virtus.pro once again showed their strong team chemistry, with the team members showing how much they understand each other. LGD Gaming also advances to the semi-finals, scoring a 2-1 victory against Mineski. Despite losing, Moon shined in this series, making it hard for the opponents to close down the games.
Meanwhile, in the lower bracket, four teams finally said goodbye to their direct invite aspirations. Team Spirit was eliminated by Evil Geniuses; Infamous by VGJ.Storm; Natus Vincere by Vici Gaming; and finally The Final Tribe by VGJ.Thunder. Note that TFT could still have qualified to TI8 directly had they scored a second place victory in this tournament.
The second round of the playoffs is as follows:
