Gaming giant Bethesda announced that Fallout 76 will not be available for purchase on Steam following its release on November 14 of this year. They announced on their FAQ page that the game would be available on Xbox One, PS4, and on PC however, Fallout 76 will only be available via Bethesda.net.
And, according to a representative from Bethesda, both the BETA version and the actual game will only be available on Bethesda.net as well with the former being ready for release by October.
While it is a bit surprising for Bethesda to not launch the game on Steam due it being the biggest digital distributor of PC games, other gaming companies have also done the same in the past. Examples being, Destiny 2 which is Battle.net exclusive, and Epic Games holding Fortnite from Steam and Google Play.
Bethesda hasn’t given any official statements regarding the switch. According to Variety, it is most likely due to the publisher wanting to grow the number of users on its own launcher and keeping more of the game’s revenue for itself.
This isn’t the first time Bethesda has made one of their games exclusive to their own platforms. Fallout Shelter was release nearly a year after it came out on Bethesda.net. It’s still unsure if Fallout 76 will share the same fate, sources do expect it to be on Steam eventually.
