Former employee and software developer for Riot Games, Barry Hawkins, stated on his blog reasons for his departure from Riot. He was one of many employees to emerge within the past three weeks shedding light as to why he left.
Kotaku released an article last August 7, 2018 entitled “Inside The Culture of Sexism At Riot Games”. The article was followed by massive criticism and vocal outbursts by the employees at Riot that confirmed the article’s legitimacy.
The article highlighted how employees at Riot Games fostered a sexist environment by keeping women from leadership roles, and aided gender imbalance in the gaming and esports industry.
The company issued an open statement to the public entitled “Our First Steps Forward” last August 29, 2018. In this article, Riot Games acknowledges its responsibility to the current events that has been happening as well as pledging change. The statement begins with an apology to the people who have worked at Riot both past and present.
Riot Games says that they will undergo “extensive internal evaluations” to fix everything and develop the company into something brighter.
